"Our SCC MediaServer implementation went extremely well. SCC provided
dedicated, diligent installation services and support. The integration
with our CCI NewsGate editorial system - photo assignments and workflows,
and news archive - make it a great fit. The flexible import and export
capabilities are impressive, as is the speed.
I have received a number of emails from end users
saying how much they love the SCC system. That alone speaks volumes."
Paul Williams, Director of Information Technology for
the Chronicle Herald, Halifax, Nova Scotia
"The installation and support we received from SCC during the first phase
of the Scripps plan to move to a cloud environment has been excellent.
We have received prompt attention to the requested needs of our photo
editors and archivists. It has been a pleasant experience to work with
SCC and we look forward to implementing more sites into our consolidation
efforts."
Mike Rzasa, Sr. Publishing Systems Manager for the
E. W. Scripps Company
“The MediaServer implementation project is a great
success. I have worked for the Dispatch for 10 years and have managed
or worked on many projects with a number of Newspaper vendors and this
is by far the smoothest and best implementation that I have experienced
in the entire 10 years. SCC’s installation team has been excellent and
instrumental in the success of the project. They should be commended for
a Job Well done!”.
Greg Francis, Project Manager for the Columbus Dispatch
Repurposing content is a
good catch phrase, until you try to keep track of it. Our new SCC Budget/Assignment
system allows editors to track a story from proposal to publication, online
or print, with or without visuals, all in one package. It's easily customizable
to accommodate any number of remote sites or publications, and because
it’s fully integrated with our existing SCC archive, it makes an invaluable
one-stop tool for the whole newsroom.
Gary Bohn, Systems Specialist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Making the switch to SCC's
ObjectML integration with CCI has been a great success for us. It's clean.
It's fast. And there's a nice "wow" factor for newsroom staff
when they search for a story and see links to the photo, graphic and page
that went with it. That's been a big hit.
As usual with SCC, they are terrific to work with.
They're very responsive and get things done on time. They're one of the
very best vendors we work with.
Neil Mara, Regional News Systems Manager
for the McClatchy Southeast Information Technology Group
Newspapers know that relevant links in a story or
photo can lead to numerous additional page views. The key is "relevant"
links. Often staff-generated links come up short and are too subjective
in nature. Calais allows you to readily incorporate state-of-the-art tagging
functionality into your digital assets.
Tags are the driving force behind our new CMS system,"
said Gary Bohn, "The SCC Calais module indexes and tags each story and
photo uploaded to our CMS. Assets now have more tags than ever before.
This in turn enriches the viewer’s experience by providing more related
content. When our new CMS goes live in May, we expect the Calais indexing
channel to be the backbone of our tagging process.
Gary Bohn, Systems Specialist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Our SCC MediaServer archive system has been in-place
for over a year now and we are doing very well with it and are very happy.
It runs very well, is very customizable and the support (via the maintenance
plan) has been superb.
It is interesting to note that it indexes type on PDFs sent through its
system so that we can search PDFs on content rather than filename. SCC's
use of an SQL database together with a high-end full-text search engine
returns results extremely fast.
We have added a double-sided-aware DVD jukebox to the mix (SAN storage
is used for wire pictures younger than 33 days), the integration has been
good and it is running very well.
Just thought you might be interested if there are any sites that haven't
reached a decision on an archive solution as yet.
Timothy Hellum, Editorial Systems Analyst for CCI and
SCC systems at The Globe and Mail, Canada
SCC's MediaServer and MediaFactory have become an integral part of our
production workflow, not only at the New Zealand Herald, but for 14 other
newspapers and magazines in our group. As well as becoming a critical
part of daily production, it has also become one of our most valuable
resources in the form of a complete digital archive. As well as archiving
photographs and graphics, we also keep a complete archive of all stories
published and pdf copies of all pages published.
We've always found SCC software to be fast, reliable and flexible. The
ability to customise the software to suit our specific requirements has
made the implementation of the product across our group a painless exercise.
The support we have received from SCC has been superb. My queries have
always been answered quickly and completely. I would have no hesitation
in highly recommending SCC's products to anyone in need of a digital archive
and/or production workflow system. We would be more than happy to talk
to anyone considering SCC's products and to provide site visits on request.
Mark Mallinger, Output Systems Manager for The New
Zealand Herald (A division of APN New Zealand Limited)
We have found Software Construction Company technology to be "state of
the art", and their technical support what it should be: available, expedient,
knowledgeable and proficient. They have worked easily with our IT staff
to customize our system and meet our expectations. They delivered the
goods as they said they would.
Rebekah Zablud Azen, News Library Consultant for The
Santa Fe New Mexican
Our decision to install MediaServer was multi-faceted. The need for a
logical and flexible workflow for our photo department was mandatory but
by no means the only factor. MediaServer is the complete package: outstanding
archiving, excellent workflow and with a highly flexible user interface.
After viewing demonstrations from a number of vendors, members of our
Photo, Graphics, Library, News Design and Systems departments unanimously
picked SCC MediaServer as the clear winner. When talking to and visiting
with current MediaServer customers, we encountered constant enthusiasm
for the system and heard how it has consistently exceeded their expectations.
These factors and the ability of MediaServer to integrate easily with
our current and future systems sealed our decision.
Stephen Mounteer, Assistant Technology Editor for The
Detroit Free Press
The SCC Installation Process was painless, on time and on budget. SCC
delivered everything they committed to during the evaluation process.
The only surprise was that there were absolutely no surprises!
SCC's seamless integration with the Adobe AlterCast Graphics Server has
eliminated countless hours of users performing redundant tasks, automating
normalization of the photos at various points throughout the workflow.
This has in turn produced a more efficient work environment for all American
Media publications.
David Thompson, Chief Information Officer for American
Media Inc. (AMI)
It has been refreshing to work with a company whose software performs
reliably as promised. SCC has solved our photo archiving problems enabling
us to preserve more than 40,000 images from our legacy AP MacArchive system
by smoothly moving the pictures and captions into the MediaServer system.
We are also bringing over 10 years of archived text files from MediaStream
and finding great management possibilities there. All departments now
access our picture and text archives from their own PCs or Macs and are
finding files quickly and easily. In addition, SCC MediaServer has proven
to be a vastly improved way for us to manage the live AP picture report
and local photos awaiting publication.
Mike Kerr, Assistant Managing Editor for The Memphis
Commercial Appeal
Not that I ever had any doubts in these guys, but the SCC archive system
has confirmed everything my research suggested. SCC's support is second
to none and they may very well make the best photo archive system on the
planet - it rocks!
David Proeber, Photo Editor for The Pantagraph
SCC MediaServer's functionality will enable us to better manage our digital
camera shoots and incorporate information from photo assignments into
the system. We are long-time users of SCC products and have always been
impressed with the quality of the applications and their ease of use.
Kathy Drewke, Image Archive Manager, for the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution
After reviewing 12 responses and viewing 4 demos we selected the SCC product.
Why? Simply put, it was the best in its class. The product is so highly
configurable that the competition didn't even come close to matching its
functionality. These guys have done a great job!
Jonathan Roderick, Director of System Technology for
The Portland Press Herald & Maine Sunday Telegram
Commitment to detail, rapid execution, and flexibility is why SCC continues
to have the most robust and powerful Live/Archive system on the market.
The ability to customize both user interface and database attributes to
the users needs as well as the agility to deal with specific needs of
the newspaper industry is outstanding.
Rich Forsgren, Photo Supervisor for the Erie Times-News
After researching several systems, we settled on SCC MediaServer as the
best fit for our current and future needs. The system offers flexibility,
fits in with our other systems well and serves as an easy-to-use and powerful
production system that solves a number of our existing workflow glitches.
The system also has a strong track record of dependability and a long
list of satisfied users.
David Snodgress, Director of Photography for the Indianapolis
Herald-Times
Our recent text archive conversion from NewsView to MediaServer was remarkable.
SCC MediaFactory's highly configurable import channels allowed us to do
the conversion - saving both time and money - and normalize our data for
improved functionality both internally and on the Web. MediaServer works!
for two years, it's been that simple.
Bryan Burnett, Director of Technology and New Media
for the Durham Herald-Sun
MediaServer is a major component of our new editorial system. The software
works wonderfully and we have been impressed with SCC's quickness to respond
to our queries.
Thomas Tanaka, Assistant Director of MIS, Le Journal
de Quebec
Key to any mass storage facility is the rapid retrieval of stored objects
- this is where SCC excels. Search results are retrieved virtually instantly
either from fields entered by users in the database or from contextual
text in PDFs or EPS files, allowing us to search for graphics based on
the textual content of the graphic - it is highly recommended.
John McKenna, IT and Production Manager for the Irish
Examiner
We wanted a highly-customizable integrated system, strong in both image
and text storage capabilities. We chose SCC's products because they provide
a modular, open architecture we can customize ourselves. We liked the
simple and flexible editing tools, the robust search engine, add-on solutions
for storing difficult formats such as Quark pages and the impressive assignment
tracking/task management system.
Nancy Burris, Head Librarian for The Times Picayune
"...the fastest and best picture desk in the world."
Dallas Morning News - Ken Geiger (Photo Editor)
"... the only system flexible enough to handle both photos and text and
pages"
Sacramento Bee - Mitch Toll (Archive Administrator)
"...in the words of the newsroom, it's great! easy to learn and to use."
The Tuscaloosa News - George Bailey (Production Director)
"...the only system worth considering."
Sports Illustrated Magazine - Philip Jache (Deputy
Picture Editor)
"The biggest reason was the flexibility of the database. Many systems
do not allow the end-user customization that is needed, and is different
at each site. SCC allows me to make those changes, rather than continually
pay the vendor to make the changes."
The Seattle Times - Greg Anderson (Senior Systems Analyst)
"We are impressed by the ease of use and how little manual maintenance
is required,"
Florence Times Daily - Chuck Landry (Information Technology
Manager)
"The two shining jewels in the crown are the MediaGrid client software
and MediaFactory server-side software that manages traffic flow into and
from the system. The depth of features in both applications, and the extent
to which they can be tailored ... allow users and administrators to solve
problems that would otherwise require expensive, customized software development."
The Sacramento Bee - Mitch Toll (Archive Administrator)
"...MediaServer, a first class product supported by first class service."
Regional Independent Media - Mike Fisher (Operations
Manager)
"...SCC Media Server has enabled me to eliminate at least 40 hours of
work each week, search times are astoundingly fast, thumbnails and previews
nearly instant, and the flexibility of the GUI are unequalled. I can build
a custom interface for each group of users to fill their precise and unique
needs.
Adding to the top-notch software engineering, SCC personnel experienced
in the publishing business have enabled us to bring elegance to our multi-media
data management.
A full integration of the photo assigning system with the new features
in MediaFactory will put us in control of our digital camera files, rather
than the other way around. I'm very glad we've waited to make the move
to digital cameras until we had a modern system in place capable of managing
them with precision."
The Flint Journal - Brian Masck (Director of Photography
& Editorial Systems)
"...Give SCC's products a good look, you'll find speed, flexiblility and
impeccable design. Support is wonderful too, questions are answered promptly
by telephone or email and software updates are delivered practically on
demand. If only all vendors were like this!"
The Grand Rapids Press - Chuck Chiavarini (Newsroom
Systems Editor)
